How to Balance pH

Soaking in a perfectly balanced hot tub is one of life’s simplest luxuries. But that crystal-clear water and silky-smooth feel don’t just happen on their own — they’re the result of balanced chemistry. When your pH and alkalinity levels drift out of range, your water can become cloudy, irritating, or even unsafe.

Why pH and Alkalinity Matter

Your hot tub’s pH level measures how acidic or basic the water is (on a scale of 0–14).

Your total alkalinity acts as the water’s buffer — helping stabilize pH and preventing sudden changes.

When these two aren’t in harmony, you’ll notice it:

• Cloudy or foamy water
• Itchy skin or irritated eyes
• Mineral buildup or corrosion on your equipment
• Sanitizers that just don’t seem to work as well

In short, balanced pH and alkalinity protect your investment and make every soak more enjoyable.

Ideal Ranges for a Healthy Hot Tub

• pH: 7.2–7.8
• Alkalinity: 80–150 ppm
• Calcium Hardness: 175–250 ppm

Common Water Imbalances

High pH (above 7.8)

Water is too basic, making sanitizers less effective and allowing scale or cloudy water to develop.

Fix it: Add a pH reducer to bring levels back into balance.

Low pH (below 7.2)

Water is too acidic, which can damage spa components and irritate skin.

Fix it: Use a pH increaser to gently raise levels.

High Alkalinity (above 150 ppm)

Can cause stubborn pH drift, cloudy water, or calcium scale.

Fix it: Lower alkalinity with a pH reducer (acid-based).

Low Alkalinity (below 80 ppm)

Leads to unstable pH and potential corrosion of metal parts.

Fix it: Add an alkalinity increaser (sodium bicarbonate) before adjusting pH.

The Correct Balancing Order

Think of alkalinity as the anchor and pH as the boat. If the anchor isn’t set, the boat drifts everywhere.

Follow this order every time you adjust your water chemistry:

1. Test the Water – Use test strips or a digital kit for accurate readings.
2. Adjust Alkalinity First – Get the water’s buffering capacity stable.
3. Then Adjust pH – Fine-tune to the target range.
4. Re-Test After 2–4 Hours – Chemistry takes time to settle.

Repeat as Needed – Monitor weekly and after heavy use or rain.
